Begin Well is a charity that provides evidence-based antenatal education for free through churches. Plymstock chapel is the latest centre to start offering free antenatal education to local families. Each course runs for 6 weeks and includes; giving-birth, caring for your baby, infant feeding, local support, baby health, your own health and well-being. As well as this the participants also form invaluable friendships with one another. The team is made up of volunteers from the church and midwifes, and other health professionals who all give up their time for free. As far as I am aware the only other options for antenatal classes locally come at a cost and so not accessible for everyone.
Although there isn't a cost for those attending the course, the churches running them pay £500 every 2 years which covers their licence fee, training, updates, DBS and resources. This fee is due in April 2023. The church also gifts each family attending a Begin Well parent handbook which are £6 a book. Typically we will have 10- 14 families booked onto each course.
The grant would enable Plymstock chapel to continue to run this amazing course by paying half the upcoming licence fee and the . The church always provides the venue and refreshments for no cost and would like to develop the course by providing 'care packages' for each family to give them some essentials. All of these things do carry a cost but the heart of Begin Well is that the courses should be free and accessible so that every family can attend.
