Cabal 2024 Update
Published on November 22, 2024 by Kira Oakley
Hello Cabal community! It's been quiet on the news front here, but we've been up to some exciting things on the new Cable protocol. Our highlights from 2024 so far:
1. Finished NLNet Grant
Early 2024 saw us wrap up the NLNet grant work that we started in 2023. Many warm thanks to NLNet for believing in & supporting us!
Through the tremendous efforts of both those writing the specs and those reviewing them, we're happy to announce that version 1.0-draft8 of the Cable specifications (likely to be adopted as 1.0) are complete:
We've also implemented much of these protocols already, including now the Handshake protocol this year in Rust and TypeScript, not to mention supporting documentation for spec implementors.
2. Cabal-CLI
Several long-standing command-line client render fixes around Unicode, now live in [email protected].
3. SplinterCon grant submission
We submitted a grant proposal to SplinterCon that, if approved, will advance Cable significantly toward being usable on the usual platforms as well as Web and Mobile, such as
- Support for using Cabal over Tor
- Improved peer discovery & connecting with Iroh
- Invite-only cabals
4. New website? 😮
Finally, planned for 2025: launching a new, gorgeous, and informative version of the Cabal website!
A very warm thanks to all of you who are backing Cabal: it makes a difference & we appreciate you.
