Update on Grace's situation! Watch our member Grace on Look North Today!
Published on November 30, 2023 by Food & Solidarity

Grace and Declan have found a new flat and have been busy moving stuff across! Food and Solidarity members were there to offer support. Ash is still waiting to find somewhere, with the eviction date coming this Wednesday!

Today, Grace will be on Look North @ 1.30pm and 6.30pm BBC1 North East & Cumbria talking about the Eviction crisis and the role no fault evictions have in it: Nationally, no fault evictions are up 34% compared to this time last year.

The UK government had planned to block charities from giving tents to homeless people, yet continue to allow the number one cause of homelessness - no fault evictions - to persist, breaking their own promise to ban them. Behind this threat is also the coming crisis of the eviction of refugees newly awarded status. The home office has begun fast tracking claims, and refugees can now be evicted after only one week of getting status. Gateshead council and North Tyneside council have relinquished their duty to house single male refugees already. Newcastle city council has not, but expects 500 refugees per month, currently people are being housed in hostels. This is an orchestrated attempt by the government to deflect from the actual cause of the housing crisis, the persistence of S21, little investment in social housing, the continuing of right to buy, and the dominance of the private rented sector in housing.

In Newcastle, we are organising to do something about this! Want to do something too? Sign up here for updates on action you can take part in!
