Filleting mackerel with Karen and cooking up a storm - 17th August

Fried mackerel at Tavy community centre
Definitely a logical step to learn how to fillet mackerel at this stage of the learning journey. Karen purchased ten whopping mackerel from Market Plaice for the group to practise on. If you are buying your fish from the fish mongers you can get them to do this for you obviously - no problem... but if you catch your own, then you need this skill to be self sufficient. Some of our fishers started by throwing back their catch or giving it away because they didn't have this skill or confidence.
The sweet spot is being able to catch, fillet and cook your own free fish. You do also need to take into account how clean the sea is at any one time and how sustainable your catch is.
Together the Marine Edibles possy made a beetroot, date and red cabbage salad and potato wedges to accompany the fried mackerel. Delicious!
Everyone filleted a fish and ate it. Building that filleting confidence.
