Fish and Chip lunch disaster and planning session
Published on June 30, 2023 by Fiona Evans

So Thursday 29th June was a special treat for the group and we decided to get fish and chips for everyone from a fancy fish & chip shop.  Ironically it was the worst fish and chips any of us have ever eaten.  So bad in fact that Hayley Kemp and I went down to the shop and took back the food for them to see in front of us.  Needless to say we are getting a full refund.  The shop also offered us 30% off our next order which we declined and very politely told them that we would never eat there again.  Anyhow this was an important lesson in poor quality food that costs a lot of money...when you could have cooked it yourself and made a much better job.  The group are keen to go shore fishing which will happen in 2 weeks time.  Also they are interested in doing Sea Dream Education's 3D experience which I am hoping to get next week.  Some members of the group are afraid of the sea and the idea of going under water in a 3D experience appeals to everyone.  We also talked about what else the group would like to do and another history session was proposed which included a walk along the Hoe to the Barbican.  Richard we can combine this will the shore fishing experience perhaps?  What the groups want to do is cook food and eat it.   Which makes sense.  So Karen will have to come back and cook her fish stew and use the pouting that we caught and cook a fish pie with the group.  We thought we could turn these into recipe cards for them to keep.  It was also proposed a trip to the Fish Market and the Pannier Market to start chatting with Market Plaice where the group will be able to use their vouchers.

Well that F n C lunch sounded dreadful. The group's ideas are really starting to flow though and it is exciting to imagine what will have been part of the journey. Sea Dream 3D sounds a fantastic immersive experience but everyone is safe on dry land, love it! FYI Reclaim The Sea for anyone who is a refugee or asylum seeker is a project for empowering yourself in a fun activities (surfing/swimming) in seawater. Enjoy shore fishing and local history stories, trips to the fish market, cooking the fish pie, and eating it together...

How dreadful it is to have a bad food experience at a fish and chip shop here in Plymouth, the centre of the local fishing trade, so sad.... they should be on the top of their game.  I'm slowly reading through a book about history of fishing villages in the Westcountry 1086-1550, and I have noted that majority of the people then had a better connection with fish, and they were far more appreciative of this as a nutritious food source. Building back that connection with confidence is hard to do when a food experience goes wrong.   I would be more than happy to walk and talk the shore line of Plymouth to the Barbican, noting long forgotten and gone fishing spots, landings, beaches, seaweed collecting, net drying, shrimping, etc. The Sea made Plymouth, we cherish it's presence, its mood, we need to respect the food that it gives us...and cook it properly.
