2023 Annual Reflection
Published on December 19, 2023 by Jonah

We publish this annual update for our contributors on Open Collective: This is what we've accomplished in 2023, and some of our upcoming plans for 2024!

What did you accomplish during 2023? How did you use money?

22 volunteer contributors made over 200 updates to our open-source educational guides on GitHub, and even more joined in our new translation efforts on Crowdin to bring our resources to the Spanish, French, Hebrew, Italian, Dutch, Chinese, and Russian communities!

We spent our money hosting internet services which promote best privacy and security practices on the internet, running our communities where thousands of members receive free advice and education about privacy and cybersecurity topics, and for reviewing products and services from our unique, unbiased perspective.

What challenges did you face during 2023? What did your Collective learn? How did you change or grow?

A lot of our time was spent in the research phase of content writing this year, with many updates and new services coming out which we wanted to thoroughly review and share with you all. Taking a step back and ensuring that what we're outputting into this space is of the highest quality is something that we learned to value greatly, maybe in comparison to a somewhat more rushed pace of 2021-2022.

Our focus on self-hosted communities over Big Tech alternatives is a huge way we grew as a community this year.

What are your plans for 2023? Anything exciting coming up?

Going in to next year we have no specific plans. We are beginning to focus on sharing news through our This Week in Privacy series, and hopefully we'll have more to share soon!
