At Soul and Sound CIC, we are passionate about empowering young people, families, and underserved communities through innovative programs that promote health, wellbeing, and creativity.

Soul and Sound CIC is seeking support to host the Healthy Mind Healthy Grind 6-week Plant-Based Cooking Workshop, designed to help families learn how to cook nutritious meals on a budget. This workshop will give you the tools to become more mindful about your food choices while developing essential cooking skills.

With the rising cost of living, we understand the challenges families are facing. That’s why we’re partnering with community groups across Barking and Dagenham, who are committed to helping promote these workshops to families they support. After the success of our workshops in local schools, many parents have asked us to run similar sessions for them—and we listened.

Over the course of 6 weeks, families will work in groups of up to 10, guided by an experienced cookery teacher. They will not only learn how to make simple, delicious, plant-based meals but also track their progress using a special workbook. Each week, they will set goals, reflect on their journey, and work towards achieving them by the end of the program.

In addition to cooking, they will learn about sustainable food practices and where to find affordable, organic ingredients from local initiatives like the Barking Food Forest and Growing Communities Farm.

We aim to align with the Legacy Asset Network aims for the network via :

  1. Creating diverse and accessible participation opportunities:
    • The workshop provides free, hands-on cooking sessions specifically designed for families facing financial hardship, ensuring accessibility to all.
    • By focusing on budget-friendly plant-based meals, it supports healthy living regardless of income level.
  2. Fortifying inter-organisational relationships based on shared values and assets:
    • Soul and Sound CIC is partnering with local community groups across Barking and Dagenham, leveraging their connections and resources to reach families in need.
    • The program strengthens ties with Barking Food Forest and Growing Communities Farm, promoting sustainable food sourcing and education.
  3. Fostering collaborations that benefit residents:
    • The workshop provides practical skills and nutritional education to local families, directly benefiting health and wellbeing.
    • Partnering organisations play an active role in promoting and supporting attendance, creating a collaborative effort to improve food security and health outcomes.
  4. Collectively accessing available funds to advance these aims:
    • The Legacy Asset Fund would allow us to expand outreach, covering venue costs, cooking ingredients, workbooks, and facilitation fees to make this initiative sustainable.
    • Funding would support more families, ensuring the program remains accessible and impactful across the borough.

Soul and Sound will meet the expectations of the network via :

  1. Serving as a distribution point for promotional materials:
    • Soul and Sound will share promotional materials (leaflets, posters, digital content) through our community partners to reach families effectively.
    • We will encourage network members to display materials and spread awareness about participation opportunities.
  2. Actively creating shared learning opportunities:
    • The workshop incorporates peer-to-peer learning, where families engage in group cooking sessions, sharing knowledge and experiences.
    • We will document best practices and insights to share with network members, helping them integrate similar accessible participation models into their work.
  3. Commitment to using The Legacy Asset Fund appropriately:
    • All funding will be used strictly to support the workshop’s delivery, ensuring it remains free and accessible to those who need it most.
    • Transparent reporting and evaluation will be provided to demonstrate impact and compliance with the fund’s objectives.

By supporting the Healthy Mind Healthy Grind Plant Based Cooking Workshop, the Legacy Asset Fund will directly contribute to a healthier, more connected, and resilient Barking and Dagenham community. Fortunately for Soul and Sound CIC we have access to a community kitchen which does not require for us to use the budget for venue hire.

Long term community impact

Through the Healthy Mind Healthy Grind workshops, we aim to create a lasting shift in how families approach food and wellbeing. By equipping participants with budget-friendly cooking skills, nutritional knowledge, and sustainable food practices, we empower them to make healthier choices long after the program ends. As more families gain confidence in preparing nutritious meals, we anticipate a ripple effect—leading to improved community health, reduced reliance on processed foods, and stronger local networks that support ongoing learning and food security. This initiative lays the foundation for a healthier, more self-sufficient community where good nutrition and sustainability become the norm.
