RJI Interview: Reporting on a burning world
Published on February 15, 2025 by Alex Ip

I was recently interviewed by James Salanga for the Reynolds Journalism Institute on how The Xylom reports on a burning world. I explained why The Xylom's focus on Asian Americans, science, and society enables us to see the issue with more depth, clarity, and nuance.

I mentioned Samad Uthman and Samuel A. Ajala's Pulitzer Center-supported reporting on the harm a Chinese quarrying company inflicted upon Indigenous Nigerians as an example of why we must not retreat from global coverage in times like these. If you haven't, you should also check out our syndication of Aorui Pi's reporting for the International Journalists' Network (IJNet) on "How Unverified Claims About the LA Wildfires Spread Across Chinese-Language Media".

This model of journalism is increasingly hard to do yet vital in a burning world. It could only be made possible through your generous support! Thank you again for growing science with words, together.
