News from Charts Ecosystem for Drupal

Updates on our activities and progress.

5.0.0-alpha1 released!

After months of work on 8.x-4.x (and using it on some of my own production sites), I have decided to scrap the 8.x-4.x branch in favor of 5.0.x and release 5.0.0-alpha1. The code is the same, it's just time to encourage more of the world to...

Recruiting a Drupal 7 Charts Tester

The majority of issues for the Charts module are for the D7 version, and I inherited them when I took over from @quicksketch. There are some great issues, many that have patches, but I don't have a great set-up for testing D7 issues, and cr...

Today is a Charts day...because my projects are requiring it to be!

Many of my work projects are using Charts. It's helpful to have real-world use cases to find bugs or needed improvements. Finding bugs yourself is sometimes more helpful than when they're identified on Drupal.org because you don't have to i...

Improving Documentation

Published on June 9, 2020 by Daniel Cothran

I've presented on Charts at two MidCamps, written some guides on Drupal.org, and there's a pretty good OSTraining article on installing and using Charts. However, people still have challenges with set-up. What can I do to improve documen...

Better Tests

Published on June 8, 2020 by Daniel Cothran

I rely on my own set-up to test Charts fixes and improvements. However, this is not efficient, particularly when I'm working on two versions simultaneously.

Data Analysis Features

Published on June 8, 2020 by Daniel Cothran

Target lines and other data management features are important for increasing Charts adoption. I have ideas about how to move some of these forward, but I'd love other peoples' thoughts.

About

I've been working on the Charts module for Drupal since 2016. It's been a great journey. There were occasions where I could make rapid progress because my day job sponsored certain features of the module, but much of the work has been a part of my own education and provided as a way to give back to Drupal.

Charts fills an important niche: it provides a way to configure (or code) charts without having to leave Drupal, and without having to start with a customized Drupal distribution. It's also an ecosystem module, meaning that many other modules can support and enhance the Charts module, such as Views Database Connector or Views Cumulative Field.

It has become clear to me, however, that for Charts to be an option that continues to make sense for users, it needs to continue rapidly evolving. If it doesn't, users will choose a different option: more than likely an option that isn't open source. So Charts needs to work faster, better, more intuitively, more consistently, and it needs additional features. A little support here will go a long way in terms of opening up my availability to work on the module (and its ecosystem modules) and for me to bring in other contributors.

With this Open Collective account, I'm looking forward to starting the next stage in the Charts module's journey!
