Khawat Network
Fiscal Host: Gift Collective
A holistic model for an ethnic women's career
About
Khawat is more than just a network; it’s a movement to address inequity in New Zealand with a focus on inclusion and equity—not just diversity. Founded by women, for women, Khawat is dedicated to empowering multicultural women at every stage of their career journeys. It recognizes that these journeys are deeply unique, shaped by culture, family, and community, and intertwined with a woman’s overall well-being.
At its heart, Khawat is about creating a sisterhood—a space where women from all walks of life and industries can come together to share their stories, celebrate their heritage, and break barriers. The name Khawat, meaning "sisters" in Arabic, reflects this vision of connection and shared experience.
The organization takes a holistic approach to career development, integrating well-being, creativity, and activism. Guided by Te Whare Tapa Whā and kaupapa Māori frameworks, Khawat believes that when women thrive, their whānau thrive too. This intergenerational focus extends support not just to women, but to their partners, siblings, parents, and allies, fostering collective understanding and collaboration.
Khawat is committed to addressing the inequities multicultural women face, such as being underpaid and underrepresented in many sectors. By highlighting success stories, creating spaces for collaboration, and equipping women with the tools to navigate life in New Zealand or start their own businesses, Khawat empowers natural leaders to inspire change within their communities.
It’s a place where first, second, and third-generation women work together, bridging gaps and strengthening connections across generations. Khawat celebrates the shared struggles, triumphs, and aspirations of women, offering a platform for their voices and ensuring their stories are seen and heard.
More than a network, Khawat is a collective movement that’s building a future where multicultural women are valued, supported, and empowered to lead in every space.
