This week we're screening:
Short around 6:30pm ish:
Then the main feature from around 7pm:
The Mondragon Experiment (50 mins) 1980
Looks at the succesful (then) 25-year-old (now 69-year-old) economic experiment in Mondragon, in the Basque region of Spain, where factories, research laboratories and banks are owned and run as a workers’ cooperative. Asks whether other western countries could follow a similar path to prosperity.
At the time Mondragon, in the Basque region of Spain, was already a flourishing industrial town with over 80 factories ranging from iron foundries and shipyards to printing works and sawmills. They were the most efficient in Spain - and they were all co-operatively owned. 18,000 workers ranthe factories, appoint the managers, and decidd how to distribute the profits. They also run their own bank, their own technical college, and their own research laboratories.
This classic BBC Horizon episode orignally aired 44 years ago on 17 November 1980 but it's still a great overview of the (still going strong today) Mondragon Cooperative Corporation, a large and successful co-op of co-ops. Today there are over 70,000 workers, they are the 10th biggest company in Spain and their have sales in 150 countries around the world. 1 in 10 cars, 60% of all trains, and 90% of all planes, 1/3 of Europes solar PV and wind turbines around the world have parts made by them or are manufactured using their technology.
